In the Triangle, Italian Food and Fine Wine Make All the Difference

Mia Francesca Trattoria, our Northern Italian restaurant located in Midtown Raleigh North Hills, suggests an array of wine pairings with many items found on our menu; from our savory chicken to our seasoned grilled fish and palate-pleasing pasta dishes.

Our Louis Jadot Pouilly Fuisse Chardonnay from Burgundy, France perfectly complements the following Mia Francesca Trattoria chicken entrees:

  • Pollo salsa Bianca: grilled chicken breast, garlic, white wine, Alfredo cream sauce, Parmigiano, and linguini pasta
  • Pollo Arrosto alla Romano: roasted chicken, white wine, garlic, chili flakes, rosemary herb roasted potatoes
  • Pollo Piccata: pan seared chicken breast, garlic, white wine, capers, lemon, linguini aglio e Olio

Mia Francesca features two Pinot Grigio Italian bottled wines from Veneto. Our Le Macine and Ca’ Stella pair splendidly with our two delectable grilled fish entrees:

  • NC Trout: grilled North Carolina trout, cauliflower puree, tri-color cauliflower, golden raisins, baby spinach, and aged balsamic
  • Salmon Caponata: grilled salmon with farm fresh winter vegetables, eggplant, capers, fennel, olive oil, balsamic, and tomato

Both our St. Francis Old Vine Zinfandel from Sonoma, California and our Castella Sinnino Chianti Riserva pair well with the following pasta dishes:

  • Classic Spaghetti and Meatballs in a tasty tomato basil sauce
  • Penne Pastore: fennel sausage, sundried tomatoes, goat cheese, and tomato basil sauce over our penne pasta
  • Pollo al Parmesan features breaded chicken breasts, tomato basil sauce, mozzarella, parmesan, and Linguini agli e olio

Remember, pairing and weight go hand-in-hand; lighter wines with lighter fare, robust wines with robust fare, and so on. It is important to look for a wine with flavor and aroma characteristics that invoke the traditions and taste of our Tuscany Italian entrées. Dave titled his review, Fresh and high quality ingredients with excellent preparation.” As a participating restaurant in the Got to Be NC agriculture program, Mia Francesca offers the freshest of ingredients. We indeed are a farm fresh to table restaurant that everyone loves and enjoys.

“For starters, don’t overlook the salads. The lentils with goat cheese and the fresh asparagus are excellent.” Dave loves the Lentils and Spinaci, which feature warm lentils with spinach and goat cheese, as well as our Asparagi Insalata with fresh asparagus, blue cheese, and tomato. “For appetizers, the calamari is a very nice portion with tasty sauces.” Dave enjoys our very popular Calamari Fritti, which is lightly fried in a spicy marinara sauce.

“For pasta… the Spaghetti Bolognese might be standard fare for many, however, Mia Francesca kicks it up with pulled pork. It is very smooth and tasty: a winner every time.” Dave knows our North Carolina inspired Spaghetti alla Bolognese is loaded with beef, veal, pork, fresh herbs, and tomato basil sauce topped with Parmigiano Reggiano.

“If you have any room left, the profiteroles are outstanding with pistachio gelato. You won’t find this in many places in Raleigh.” Our Profiteroles are delicate cream puffs toasted and filled with pistachio gelato and topped with a divinely homemade chocolate sauce. This is one of just many decadent choices from our Dessert (Dolci) menu.

“For beverages, if you are a wine drinker, try the…Pinot Grigio.” By the glass, two excellent Pinot Grigio options are Le Macine and Ca’ Stella Veneto. By the bottle, two very popular Pinot Grigio choices this time of year are Dantello and Baroncini Veneto.

4 Ways Fresh North Carolina Heirloom Tomatoes are Served Italian Style

Typically found in flower beds in their earliest history, there are several delicious varieties grown today, all known for their intense flavor and each one carrying interesting names such as the Italian Pear and the Pantanara.   • Our Insalata Panzanella is tastefully showcased with juicy heirloom tomatoes, along with red onion, arugula, herbed croutons, red wine vinaigrette, basil, fresh mozzarella, and aged balsamic. Our guests love this classically natural Italian salad.
  • Our Halibut Panzanella features pan seared halibut, heirloom tomatoes, red onions, herbed croutons, arugula, red wine vinaigrette, basil, and Saba. This is another palate pleasing Mia Francesca Trattoria meal surrounded with fresh tomatoes.
  • Our Heirloom Tomato-Pesto Pizza is an authentic Italian pizza with local farm fresh tomatoes, basil pesto, garlic, oregano, Parmigiano, olive oil, and sea salt. It is interesting to note that Pesto is a definitive Italian sauce that originated from Genoa in the Liguria region of Northern Italy.
  • Our Heirloom Tomato Panino presents Italian ciabatta bread cut horizontally and filled with fresh local heirloom tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, applewood smoked bacon seasoned with basil, olive oil, sea salt, and lemon aioli. Our guests really enjoy our satisfyingly earthy Italian Panini.

Pastas, Sauces, and Wines at Mia Francesca Trattoria in North Hills

Our award winning kitchen staff at Mia Francesca Trattoria always adds just the right sauces to our delicious farm to table lunch and dinner entrees. These sauces enhance the flavor of our fine foods and they blend perfectly with the meal to the delight of all our guests. For Tuscany Italian, sauces can truly define fresh food and are essential to our daily menu.  Everything from our finest homemade tomato sauce to our delicious marinades, we are noted for defining all of our sauces in very unique ways.

Let’s look at two of our special pasta dishes, each with distinctive sauces, and Justin Harkey, our General Manager, will recommend a wine that complements each one. Sauces play an important role in deciding the perfect wine pairing.

First, our very popular Spaghetti alla Bolognese features beef, veal, and pork as well as fresh herbs, tomato basil sauce, and Parmigiano Reggiano.  Red sauces always pair well with red wines.  We recommend our Cabernet Sauvignon, named after both the special grape and the wine it produces.  The primary taste of this excellent wine is a flavorful black current, but other overtones may include blackberry and mint.  Since Cabernets are very hearty and rich, this means they go best with our tomato-based sauces.  Mia Francesca Trattoria has four superb Cabernet Sauvignon wine selections for you to choose from every day.

Second, our delicious Pollo salsa Bianca features a farm-fresh grilled chicken breast, garlic, white wine, Alfredo cream sauce, Parmigiano, and linguini pasta. Pinot Grigio is a leaner style Italian white wine that pairs well with our cream sauces.  It has a smooth, almost silk-like flavor that leaves a wonderful impression with the most particular of connoisseurs. Mia Francesca offers two Pinot Grigio selections, both produced in the vineyards of Veneto, Italy: La Macine and Ca’ Stella.

Complete your dining experience with our chocolate sauce-covered dessert choice.
